After Olympics bid, India sets sights on hosting 2030 Commonwealth Games.
After its hard push for the 2036 Olympics, India now looks forward to hosting the Commonwealth Games 2030. According to reports, the Indian Olympic Association is with the government looking into bringing the grand multi-sport event to the country. This is now to be India’s second CWG, following Delhi 2010.
The move is part of India’s larger vision to become a global sporting hub. With improving infrastructure, increasing interest in sports, and successful hosting of events such as the 2023 Cricket World Cup, India feels it has the potential to host a world-class Commonwealth Games. The government is likely to shortlist major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, or Ahmedabad as venues, thereby ensuring world-class facilities and hassle-free delivery.
Hosting the 2030 CWG would give a significant boost to India’s sports ecosystem, attract global investment, enhance tourism, and promote grassroots-level sports development. The Delhi 2010 CWG was criticized for mismanagement, but India has since shown its ability to organize large-scale sporting events efficiently.
However, there will be stiff competition from Canada and Australia, who have already expressed interest. The win goes to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), considering factors like all infrastructures being in place, financial viability, and legacy plans.
Given the rise of India as a world sporting power and the success in hosting international events, winning the bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games will only add more laurels to the nation’s sporting credentials, opening the doors for an Olympics bid in the near future. The next few months will be decisive as India formalizes its proposal and starts gaining momentum towards this coveted opportunity.
